Union Settlement

Union Settlement Association began in 1895 on East 104th Street in East Harlem, an area rich in culture and diverse in immigrant identity but also one of the lowest-income communities in New York City.

Union Settlement Association is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of underserved communities. We bring education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. By helping our neighbors realize their goals, we build the vitality and success of East Harlem.

A Union Settlement family might have a toddler enrolled in childcare, a pre-teen in an after-school program, a teen coping with depression, a working parent in a computer, ESL or job training course, or a grandparent in a seniors’ exercise program. This approach has empowered our neighbors generation-by-generation in ways that demonstrably improve our community.

nycTIES Partnership Year: 2015

Focus of Volunteering Efforts: East Harlem Community Support

nycTIES partnered with Union Settlement on a variety of volunteer events over the course of the year. From getting our hands dirty in the community garden, to helping students in the adult education programs hone their professional skills via a LinkedIn workshop and mock interviews, to wrapping dozens of gifts collected as part of the annual holiday gift drive, TIES members generously contributed their time and talent each month to support the East Harlem community.

Fundraising Events: Karaoke, Yankees game and the nycTIES Annual Gala at Beauty & Essex

This year, we brought back our popular karaoke night, partnered with Host Committee on a fundraiser at a Yankees game, and capped off the year with a spectacular Annual Gala at Beauty & Essex to benefit Union Settlement.
