After volunteering at a variety of events for The Children’s Storefront and the GO project, he offered to lead this year’s charity selection team. Under his leadership, the team researched charities across the city, interviewed the directors, and provided us with solid possibilities for a partner. Ryan even traveled to the finalists to make sure they were viable options. Thanks to him and his team, we now have a terrific new partner, Fedcap. Thank you, Ryan, for building such a solid foundation for us this year.

1. How did you find out about nycTIES ?
My colleague, Stephen Lee, first introduced me to nycTIES back in 2010. I started going to a happy hour here and there and, eventually, got involved.

2. What has been your favorite charity to work with and why?
I enjoyed working with the GO Project because the kids were so much fun. They really enjoyed having us around and that was an awesome feeling.

3. What is your favorite nycTIES memory?
My favorite memory is when Fedcap was selected to be our charity partner. After working on the charity selection committee, I was so glad that our members found one of our selections that they were excited about.

4. What’s something you have gained from nycTIES that you did not expect to gain when you joined?
Hmm…a productive reason to go to happy hour? Seriously though, I’ve been amazed at the number of young professionals I’ve come across who are so passionate about giving back to their community. It is truly amazing.

5. What are three of your favorite NYC spots?
The Frying Pan on a sunny day; Piano’s in LES, and Bubby’s in Tribeca (the mac & cheese is so good)

6. Name three things we would find in your purse or briefcase.
My ipod, The Economist, and a ridiculous amount of random to-do lists I make

7. Favorite restaurant?
Boqueria: awesome tapas, sangria, and a great environment

8. Favorite Facebook photo of yourself?

9. Best concert you have ever been to?
This is a tough one…I’d have to say Red Hot Chili Peppers or Incubus, although I’m most nostalgic for seeing Green Day/Blink 182 in ninth grade.

10. If you could meet anyone, who would it be?
Aziz Ansari or Emma Rossum: for two completely different reasons.

11. What is one of your life goals?
To become as good of a cook as my father and step-father are.

12. What’s the next vacation you want to take?
I just got back from California and Vegas, which was awesome, but I think the next vacation will be to go back to Florida to visit my family. It’s been too long.

13. Three things your family would say we might not know about you
1) If I’m arguing with you, it doesn’t mean I disagree, it just means I love to argue. 2) A few of the quickest ways to my heart: a rare steak, a cold beer, or anything having to do with FSU football. 3) I’m not avoiding you…it’s just really hard to get me on the phone.

14. Who is the love of your life
Just in case one of the runner-ups stumbles across this, I’ll plead the fifth. So…I’ll go with my childhood dog, Liquorish.

15. Who is you favorite celebrity besides Beyonce?
Emma Rossum…or Kate Upton.

16. Hobbies
Traveling as often as I can; anything to keep me active: football, running, basketball; watching Florida State football

17. Tobias or Gob (Arrested Development reference)
Love Arrested Development. It has to be Gob. *Chicken dance*

18. If another nycTIES member were to play you in a movie, who would it be and why?
Selwyn Turner because I’d be pretty awesome with a full southern drawl.

Where are you from originally?
Brooklyn, NY

How long have you lived in NYC and where do you live now?
I lived in NYC for 29 years before moving to Chicago for school. I’ve enjoyed my time in Chicago but am happy to say I’ll be back in NYC (and finally able to hit a few nycTIES happy hours) for good in 3 months!

What do you love (or miss) most about NYC?
Definitely my wife (she lives in the tri-state area), the energy and excitement of NYC, and the great people and partners of nycTIES

Where did you go to college/grad school? Major?
I went to Baruch College for my BBA in Finance and MS in Accountancy and will be graduating from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in June with an MBA (concentrations in Economics and Entrepreneurship)

What company do you work? What is your role and professional background?
Before my MBA I spent 7 years as an auditor at a Big 4 public accounting firm. After graduation I will be starting a new career as an investment banker.

What are your hobbies?
Eating – I once went on a cross country road trip modeled after Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives (a TV show on the Food Network)
Travelling – I got back from Mexico yesterday and will be heading to Hawaii next week
Sports – I’m a huge Knick fan and helped lead my University of Chicago intramural flag football team to the 2011 championship

nycTIES Experience

How did you find out about nycTIES?
I was actually cleaning my apartment a few years ago when I saw nycTIES founders Alex Price and Matt Farkash profiled on NY1 as the New Yorkers of the week. I had always done volunteer work but found it hard to find opportunities that were truly meaningful to me where I also had a chance to work alongside other young, talented, and committed professionals.

What has been your favorite charity to work with and why?
This is an impossible question to answer. I joined nycTIES as the first Project Management Team Leader and had the opportunity to manage a group of volunteers that oversaw relationships with six prior charity partners. All of the organizations do amazing work and are filled with tons of people that are fully committed to their respective causes.

What is your favorite nycTIES memory?
I have two:
i.	First, the NAC Olympics in 2008. This was my first major nycTIES event. Seeing firsthand the energy that nycTIES members brought to the volunteer event was truly remarkable and was what immediately got me hooked on nycTIES. Whether coordinating wheelchair races, bean bag tosses or simply switching roles at the face paint station (letting kids paint our faces) you could tell that the nycTIES volunteers were there because they wanted to make a difference and have fun at the same time.

ii.	Second, planning the 2009 fundraiser for nycTIES. Working 50 hours a week in my day job and 20-30 hours a week coordinating the fundraiser with fellow nycTIES members was truly life changing for me. The opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and do something I had never done before (event planning) was amazing and something you can’t always get in your job. As CFO, I knew I would be involved in financial decisions related to the event (i.e. venue/marketing costs, ticket pricing, etc.) but the contract negotiations, event promotion, and general creativity required in coordinating a high class event on a limited budget were true challenges for me.
What were your roles when you were involved in the organization?
From 2008-2009, I was the Project Management Team Leader. In this , I managed a team that coordinated volunteer opportunities with current and past charity partners, managed the charity selection process, and tracked the number of hours and value of our volunteer impact.
From 2009-2010, I was the CFO, handling all financial tasks associated with running the organization and played a significant role in coordinating the annual fundraiser (venue selection, contract negotiation, marketing/promotion) despite never having organized such an event before.

How has nycTIES helped you personally/professionally as you have moved along in your career?
There is no way to adequately explain how much nycTIES has helped me. It was nycTIES and its highly intelligent and motivated members that inspired me to apply to business school and pursue a new career. Additionally, if not for Alex Price’s recommendation and my amazing nycTIES experiences I’m convinced I never would have been accepted to school. Finally, despite having lived in NYC for 29 years, I met many of my closest friends during the two years I was involved in nycTIES.

What advice do you have for new members looking to get involved with nycTIES?
Recognize the opportunity that is in front of you. You can get as much from the organization as you are willing to put into it. Whether you are looking to meet new people, make a difference, or develop a new skill set, the opportunities are there for the taking. Don’t be afraid to propose and lead a new project or initiative. There is no other organization that will grant you the freedom to run with an idea and try something new like nycTIES.

Miscellaneous

Name three things we would find in your purse or briefcase
iPhone, financial calculator, and bills that need to be paid

What is the best concert you have ever been to?

Ha! You can tell this questionnaire was prepared by our resident living music encyclopedia Scott Brenner. I don’t go to concerts. I did recently go to Congress Theater in Chicago. They hold a lot of concerts there but I was there to watch a MMA fight.

What is one of your life goals?
In the short-term, I’m excited to graduate and move back to NYC to be with my wife (we’ve lived in different cities for 4 years). In the medium-term, I want to be successful in my new career and start a family. In the long-term, I want to return to the world of non-profit/social enterprise

What’s the next vacation you want to take?
As I mentioned above, I’m going to Hawaii next week but the trip that has me most excited is my post-graduation honeymoon in Spain

If you could meet anyone, who would it be?
Jeremy Lin of the NY Knicks of course!

Our first event with the young adults from Fedcap is specially designed to “break the ice” between nycTIES members and the young people we’ll be working with for the rest of the year. While you might be all too familiar with the ice breakers and team building exercises used by many professional development coaches in corporate America, Fedcap’s young adults are not. Bring your own experience and knowledge to this event as you guide young participants through activities that motivate them to work together as teams while also learning something about themselves and their own strengths.

Fedcap’s clients all have barriers that hamper their ability to get a job, and we want to help at-risk youth, age 18-24, break down those barriers. We hope to accomplish this through events where nycTIES members will work one-on-one with young Fedcap clients in team building exercises, resume editing and interview coaching as well as recreational outings like going to a museum or spending an afternoon in Central Park.

There is a lot of excitement surrounding the selection of our new charity partner for nycTIES and I’m going to add to that that excitement right now. With a new charity partner, we will also have slightly different-looking leadership. I am happy to announce today that Elise King will be assuming the role of nycTIES President moving forward.

I could not be more happy for or proud of both Elise and nycTIES as this is an exciting move for the organization in many ways. Elise has been an integral part of nycTIES for five years now and a wonderful leadership partner of mine for the past two years while serving as Vice President. With all the accomplishments, success, and impact that we could reflect on over the past two years, it’s even more exciting to anticipate the increased impact that lies ahead. The foundation for local young professionals to materially impact NYC through the practice of accountable philanthropy is a dynamic concept that is primed to continue. There is no question that Elise is the proper individual to lead us through our next stages.

I look forward to continuing to support her directly as well as taking on a slightly different role for our organization. Focusing on attracting the new breed of young professional leaders in NYC is a constant goal of our organization. I have decided to focus my energies on a concerted effort to develop relationships with the city’s various institutions to foster this. It is crucial to the long-term sustainability of our organization that we continue this effort. It is also crucial to the long-term sustainability of the NYC philanthropic community. We need to continue to develop our future leaders with the concept of accountable philanthropy imbedded as we all develop professionally. In addition, we would also like to put more structure around an alumni program–another initiative that we hope to tackle in the upcoming months.

New charity partner, new president, new impact that we are making in NYC–nycTIES keeps rolling.

I would love for everyone to join me in a huge congratulations to Elise as we all know it is well-deserved. Her passion for the organization is infectious and I’m excited to be part of an organization that she is leading.

Looking forward to seeing everyone very soon with our new charity partner!

David Carpentier
