Announcing nycTIES’ New President – Elise King

There is a lot of excitement surrounding the selection of our new charity partner for nycTIES and I’m going to add to that that excitement right now. With a new charity partner, we will also have slightly different-looking leadership. I am happy to announce today that Elise King will be assuming the role of nycTIES President moving forward.

I could not be more happy for or proud of both Elise and nycTIES as this is an exciting move for the organization in many ways. Elise has been an integral part of nycTIES for five years now and a wonderful leadership partner of mine for the past two years while serving as Vice President. With all the accomplishments, success, and impact that we could reflect on over the past two years, it’s even more exciting to anticipate the increased impact that lies ahead. The foundation for local young professionals to materially impact NYC through the practice of accountable philanthropy is a dynamic concept that is primed to continue. There is no question that Elise is the proper individual to lead us through our next stages.

I look forward to continuing to support her directly as well as taking on a slightly different role for our organization. Focusing on attracting the new breed of young professional leaders in NYC is a constant goal of our organization. I have decided to focus my energies on a concerted effort to develop relationships with the city’s various institutions to foster this. It is crucial to the long-term sustainability of our organization that we continue this effort. It is also crucial to the long-term sustainability of the NYC philanthropic community. We need to continue to develop our future leaders with the concept of accountable philanthropy imbedded as we all develop professionally. In addition, we would also like to put more structure around an alumni program–another initiative that we hope to tackle in the upcoming months.

New charity partner, new president, new impact that we are making in NYC–nycTIES keeps rolling.

I would love for everyone to join me in a huge congratulations to Elise as we all know it is well-deserved. Her passion for the organization is infectious and I’m excited to be part of an organization that she is leading.

Looking forward to seeing everyone very soon with our new charity partner!

Charity Selection – 2012

Thank you to our charity selection team, led by Ryan O’Hara, for presenting us with three great charities to choose from: Fedcap, The Door, and Part of the Solution. Please read up on each one and vote here http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/65C68KQ by Monday, Feb 6th at 9 am.

Fedcap

www.fedcap.org

Fedcap is a 75-year-old nonprofit that helps people break through barriers to employment and achieve economic independence. Click here to watch our introductory video.

Fedcap has many volunteer opportunities for nycTIES members. We are located in Chelsea and volunteer opportunities can occur after 5 on weekdays and on weekends. You may work directly with the people we serve by mentoring an at-risk young person–helping them see a better future. This will include social outings where a group may go to a baseball game, visit a museum, etc. You can also present your profession at our quarterly Connect2Careers job fairs, an event styled after ‘speed-dating’ to give young people a broader perspective on a variety of employment fields. Or you can help  graduates of our training programs develop critical interview skills with mock job interviews. Just as important, you may share your knowledge and talents in areas where Fedcap needs support like social media strategy, state-of-the-art IT or other areas. Fedcap has a number of initiatives we are trying to start up—a nycTIES partnership can provide the expertise and the legs to help stand-up a new program at Fedcap

The Door

www.door.org

The Door is entering its 40th anniversary year – a landmark anniversary for an organization that has helped tens of thousands of at-risk youth in New York City, and an excellent time for nycTIES to partner with us.  One of our goals for the year is to raise The Door’s profile and increase awareness of the work we do, especially among young professionals.   Throughout the year we will have many opportunities for your members to come in and volunteer or help us celebrate our anniversary, and we’re open to new ideas from you, as well!

Following are a few examples of ways we can partner together over the course of the year.  We are located in SoHo and volunteer events could occur from 5-8 on weekdays or on Sundays:

-          Potential hands-on volunteer opportunities

o   Crisis closet organization – sort through clothing and supplies that have been donated for our runaway and homeless youth

o   Community meals – serve food to our young people during Door-wide celebrations (i.e., the “Prom” in the summer; Giving Thanks dinner in November; etc.)

o   Professional development workshops – lead a one-time class on topics relevant to young people in our career training programs (i.e., Resume Writing 101; How to Prepare for a Job Interview; Handling Workplace Conflict; etc.)

o   Life skills workshops – lead a one-time class on topics relevant to all of our young people (i.e., Money Management 101; Healthy Living; etc.)

Potential fundraising/awareness raising opportunities

o   Attend Door fundraising events and help us promote to your membership

o   Host your own fundraising event with proceeds benefiting The Door

o   Hold a food and/or clothing drive for our runaway and homeless youth program

o   Volunteer at Door fundraising events

o   Provide marketing expertise to assist with our 40th anniversary campaign

Please see the attached PowerPoint presentation as well.

Part of the Solution (POTS)

www.potsbronx.org/

Located in the Bronx, POTS is only a 20-minute Metro-North ride from Grand Central.  The community kitchen is open during the day and on weekends.  Partnering with POTS will give nycTIES members the opportunity to continue to meet the ever growing needs of our Bronx community – which has the distinction of having the highest percentage of people suffering from hunger of any congressional district in the nation, as well as the greatest number of low-income people in the country by:

·         Serving meals in our café-style Community Dining Room (“soup kitchen”) or helping guests ‘shop’ in our Food Pantry

·         Joining & helping us expand POTS newest program – the Family Club.  On Wednesday evenings, POTS is now offering homework help for students, as well the opportunity for families to cook and share dinner in our Community Dining Room

·         Getting involved with POTS’ Haunted House, Back-to-School supplies giveaway, Thanksgiving meal distribution, Dear Santa letter fulfillment or Holiday Store

·         Providing pro bono legal help: if you are a lawyer or know one who might be interested

·         Donating any special skills you can share – such as Social Media or Communications assistance, organizing drives, fundraising help, etc.

Please see the attached Power Point Presentation as well.

Erica Bossen – January Member of the Month

Erica Bossen continuously strengthens nycTIES by volunteering in a variety of ways. Volunteering her time, she has attended everything from yoga classes to tutoring sessions with the students of The Children’s Storefront and the GO Project.  Volunteering her professional skill sets, she has helped the events team by acquiring silent auction items from her employer, the NBA, and even initiated our FIT clinic with GO Project. The FIT clinic featured former WNBA and NBA players and was one of our most successful events of the year: For that event, we have received many letters of thanks from GO and the parents of children who participated. A huge thanks to Erica for being an all-star on so many fronts.

1. How did you find out about nycTIES?

I learned about nycTIES from a friend (Elise King- VP of nycTIES) of a friend (Geraldine Cowper). I was looking for more volunteer opportunities in the city, and nycTIES was the perfect organization to join in order to volunteer with good folks (now great friends) on a consistent basis. So big thank you to G for introducing me to E!

2. What has been your favorite charity to work with and why?

nycTIES has collaborated with top notch NYC charities – GO Project, The Children’s Storefront, etc. But hands down, my favorite charity is the Emily Krzyzewski Center in Durham, NC, which is a non-profit organization committed to providing educational programming to low-income, high potential students in the community. I’ve been volunteering with the Emily K Center since college, and it is a well-run non-profit that is making a huge impact on its students.

3. What is your favorite nycTIES memory?

My favorite memory is the NBA FIT clinic we organized for the students of the GO Project. The NBA generously offered to host the clinic, led by the phenomenal NBA/WNBA legends Sue Wicks and Marty Conlon. It was a great experience to bring together my NBA colleagues and nycTIES friends to volunteer at such a fun event for such a good cause.

4. What’s something you have gained from nycTIES that you did not expect to gain when you joined?

When I joined, I was simply looking for volunteer opportunities in the city. Little did I know I would meet a group of volunteers that I now consider some of my closest friends.

5. What are three of your favorite NYC spots?

1) Madison Square Garden during Duke’s annual basketball games in NYC

2) Equinox during Saturday morning kickboxing class

3) My rooftop for a game night with friends

Job Opportunity – StartingBloc

StartingBloc is committed to becoming a truly sustainable organization. As we continue to move from an educational institution to a lifelong Fellowship, we are building the systems that will enable StartingBloc to serve its Fellows for years to come.

With an eye for sustainability, StartingBloc is now searching for it’s next staff member. The next Fellowship Director will be in charge of facilitating new connections and deepening existing ones for a community that grows to 1800 Fellows in 2012.

Our current Fellowship Director, Sarah Bishop (LON ’08), has spent more than two years evolving the role. She exceeded expectations from the start, transforming the position to lead teams of more than 50 volunteers each year. Now Sarah is applying for graduate school, and we know that whichever program she chooses will be lucky to have her. While her last day at StartingBloc is still far in the future, our commitment to sustainability leads us to begin searching for her successor now.

We are planning an extensive knowledge transfer process for the next bright leader who steps into the Fellowship Director position. This new hire will work with Sarah over the course of several months to build new programs and jointly implement an entire recruitment, admissions, and Institute cycle.

Sarah has built a solid foundation for the Fellowship Director position, and we can’t wait to see what’s next. Ready to take the reigns? Learn more about the selection process, and apply for the position by sending a cover letter and resume to jobs@startingbloc.org.

We are incredibly proud of the strong foundation that has been built at StartingBloc, and look forward to the next wave of innovations that will strengthen our community of Fellows.

Sincerely,

Adriana Pentz (BOS ’07)

Volunteer Opportunity – Web Developer

Do the words “HTML”, “Javascript”, and “SQL” mean everything to you? Okay, do they mean something to you? If so, NYCTies needs your help! We are looking for a web developer who can help maintain and create sections of the website as well as work closely with our partner charity to promote the cause. Graphic design experience wouldn’t hurt either, just sayin’. In addition to the technical skills, you must work well with others- yes, that old kindergarten gem- and be a good ambassador for nycTIES. Now if you’re worried about what this is going to do to your Jersey Shore-watching time, fear not. You can work on your own time and you can also list any and all of your contributions on a professional resume. If this sounds like a good fit for you, please contact Gerren Scoon at gscoon@gmail.com and he can fill you in on all the rest. Thanks!

Volunteer Opportunity – Constant Contact Coordinator

If ”human rolodex” is something your friends like to call you, then you should probably think about getting some new friends. But, first, nycTIES needs you and your impressive organizational skills! We are looking for somebody to keep our contact list up to date to make sure that everyone who joins nycTIES is in the loop about all the great events and activities that we have coming up. The time commitment is minimal and completely ad hoc (look it up) so it’s an easy yet meaningful way to get more involved. Stephen Lee steplee04@gmail.com can answer whatever questions you may have but let’s just say if The Container Store thrills you at all, then this is the job for you. Thanks!
